10 Ways to Strengthen your Christian Walk in 2016

The new year often brings new beginnings, a fresh start so to speak to the outlook of many people.  If you have been struggling to strengthen and improve your Christian walk, and your life in general, now is the perfect time to start fresh.  Forget about the past ruts and poor habits and start today to formulate a plan of action to take your life and your current Christian walk to the next level.

Here are 10 ways that you can improve your walk with God, as well as your overall life.

1. Read the Word

One of the best ways to boost your Christian walk and improve the quality of your life is to read the Bible.  The Bible is filled with incredibly powerful advice, encouragement, promises and historical facts that will help to strengthen your faith and teach you more about who God is and what He wants for your life.

The Bible is literally God’s blueprint to us (His children) on how to live a fulfilled life full of joy, peace happiness and prosperity.  We are told in His Word that He has Plans for us and they are plans to give us success and give us fulfillment and purpose.

Jeremiah 29:11 ” For I know the plans I have for you,” says the Lord. “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope.”

The more time we spend in the Word of God and the more time we put those words into our hearts, the stronger our faith will grow in Christ and the promises for a great life that He has given to us.

2. Improve Prayer Life

Prayer is how we communicate with God and is one of the ways we develop a relationship with Him.  Praying is incredibly crucial to improving your walk with God as it tells us in the Word that we don’t fight against flesh and blood but the principalities and powers of darkness. ( Ephesians 6:12).  We need to communicate with God through prayer in order to give us power over the spiritual realm.

Prayer also allows us to be able to garner strength through Christ to overcome obstacles, troubles and trials that we encounter in our lives.  The Word of God calls us to pray, and in praying we are showing reverence and obedience to God, which will allow blessings and breakthroughs to open up over our lives.

Ephesians 6:18 – “Pray in the Spirit at all times and on every occasion. Stay alert and be persistent in your prayers for all believers everywhere.”

Colossians 4:2 “ Devote yourselves to prayer with an alert mind and a thankful heart.”

Prayer is not just about talking to God when we get up or before we go to bed, it should be a daily conversation with Him, all day long as if He was sitting beside you.

3. Get a Christian Mentor

It doesn’t matter whether you are a new Christian, a mature Christian or even a pastor or somebody in some sort of position of authority.  The fact of the matter is that we all need a Christian mentor that we can confide in, talk to, and have pray for us and encourage us on a regular basis.

Imagine that you are a glass and every day as you share your faith with others, or battle the every day struggles of life you are slowly becoming more and more empty.  Without a spiritual refreshment from a mentor you would soon run dry.  You need spiritual refreshment that will fill you back up.  Having a Christian mentor that is spiritually stronger and more mature than you can really help to pour into your life, challenge and encourage you.

Finding a mentor can be a bit tough, however one of the best ways to find a mentor is to ask a pastor at a local church for a recommendation or start attending a mentors group from your local church.

4. Purpose to Bless somebody Every day

One of the best ways you yourself can receive blessings and breakthroughs in your life is to bless somebody else.  Each and every day your prayer should be that God sends somebody in your path that you can be a blessing to.

Blessing others is one of the most overlooked ways that we can improve our Christian walk and the overall quality of our life.  We are told in the Word of God that it is more blessed to give than  to receive. (Hebrews 7:7).  In fact the God challenges us to take care of the poor, and states that if you overlook the poor, or you refuse to bless those who are in need, that you will have many curses over your life.

Proverbs 28:27 – “He who gives to the poor will never want, But he who shuts his eyes will have many curses.”

Becoming a generous person both in money and time towards those in need, and having the desire to bless somebody in need on a daily basis will open up the door for God to be able to do miraculous things in your own life.

5. Start Giving Tithes and Offerings

This is often a very touchy subject as many people find it hard to part with their hard earned money.  The truth of the matter is though is that when you refuse to give tithes and offerings you are not only closing the door for God to bless you in life, but the Bible tells us that you are actually stealing from God.

In fact giving tithes is so important that God even tells us to “test” Him in this area of our lives.  He basically tells us to give tithes like we are called to and see the incredible blessings and breakthroughs that He will give to us in our lives.

Malachi 3:10 “Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, so that there may be food in My house, and test Me now in this,” says the LORD of hosts, “if I will not open for you the windows of heaven and pour out for you a blessing until it overflows”

Giving tithes is a crucial part of improving your walk with God, improving your faith and trust in God and improving your quality of life.

6. Get Connected to a Good Local Church

Getting connected to a good local church will greatly help to improve your walk in Christ.  The purpose of church is to congregate and develop relationships with other believers so that you can encourage each other, pray for each other and have good positive people to spend time with.

Just as your physical body needs food in order to stay strong and keep alive, so too does your spiritual self.  God has ordained certain people to deliver His Words to us and in doing so we are encouraged, challenged and fed spiritually.

7. Listen to Christian Music

There is so much negativity wrapped up in the lyrics and tone of much of the music coming out of the world today.  Christian music is a great way to be encouraged and to hear about God’s promises and His goodness through song.

They say that music speaks to the soul, so it would then make sense that if we are looking to escape the world and its views and work at improving our Christian walk that we would listen to music that is uplifting and full of praise and worship to our Lord.

8. Apply the Bible to Your Life

Many people simply read the Bible, think what they have read is good and agrees with what they have read, but never actually make a plan to put what they have read into action.  We cannot simply read the Bible and then expect our lives or our Christian walk to improve.  Rather we have to apply what we have read, and have learned to our daily lives.

This will be the most difficult part because as you begin to apply the principles of the Word to your life, the enemy will no doubt be right there to discourage you from continuing to do so.  However if you continue and persevere you will notice that your life will change for the best.

9. Spend Time Waiting on the Lord

Have you ever prayed to God only to be ignored and not have your prayer answered?  Well the truth of the matter is that God did answer, the problem is that because of the busyness of our lives, and the incredible number of distractions that we have around us all the time it tends to hinder our ability to sit still long enough in silence to hear what God has to say.

God always gives us an answer to our prayers, it is us who have to spend time in waiting on the Lord to hear what the answer is.  You need to take time out of your day to just spend focused time with God, waiting on Him and listening for His answer to your prayers.

Psalm 27:14 “Wait for the Lord; Be strong and let your heart take courage; Yes, wait for the Lord”

Isaiah 40:31 “But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.”

10. Be Thankful and Speak Faith in every Circumstance

The power of the tongue is incredible, not only in this physical realm but also in the spiritual realm as well.  It doesn’t matter who you are or where you’re from the fact is that you will see hardships, you will see trouble and things will just simply come against you.  We are told however to give thanks to God in all things at all times whether good or bad.

Speaking out words of faith is also a crucial part of improving your Christian walk and the quality of life you are living right now.  It is up to us to speak in faith the promises that God has given to us.  To believe that what the Word of God tells us and promises us will happen in our lives.  Words have the power to create and destroy, so the question is “Are you creating a better life through your words or destroying it?”

Proverbs 18:20-21 “Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruits. From the fruit of a man’s mouth his stomach is satisfied; he is satisfied by the yield of his lips.”

1 Thessalonians 5:18 “Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you who belong to Christ Jesus.”

Philippians 4:6,7 Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.”
