The Armor of God is talked about in the Word of God in Ephesians 6:10-18 and tells us the following:
“ Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.
Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people. ”
Obviously from the Bible Verse above the “armor of God” does not represent actual physical armor that you wear, but rather a metaphoric armor based on certain elements. The pieces of the armor of God include:
- Belt of Truth
- Breastplate of Righteousness
- Sandals of Gospel of Peace
- Shield of Faith
- Helmet of Salvation
- Sword of the Spirit (Word of God)
Why the armor of God is Necessary?
The armor of God is absolutely necessary when you become a child of God, and enter into a covenant with Him. In becoming a follower of Christ you are spiritually declaring war on satan and his followers, because you have become a traitor to him. Satan will now begin to wage war over your life, constantly trying to discourage you, kill your faith in Christ, and in the long run get you to renounce Christ and follow satan once again, thus destroying your inheritance of eternal life with Christ Jesus.
John 10:10 “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.”
Belt of Truth
The Belt of truth is the first part of the armor of God and represents the truth of Jesus Christ. We need to firmly secure the truth that Jesus Christ is the Son of God who came to earth in the flesh and died for our sins, so that we may be given eternal life. Many times satan will try to steal this truth from us and try to twist scripture and feed us deceptive words in order to keep us from believing the real truth about who Jesus is
John 14:6 “Jesus told him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me.”
Breastplate of Righteousness
This piece of armor speaks about who we are in Christ Jesus. Because of the debt that Christ paid for us, we are now counted as righteous in the eyes of God. When we wear the breastplate of righteousness, we are aware of our righteousness in Christ Jesus, and we are protected by this righteousness from the curse of the law, and we are now a child of God and under His protection.
Galatians 3:10 “But those who depend on the law to make them right with God are under his curse, for the Scriptures say, “Cursed is everyone who does not observe and obey all the commands that are written in God’s Book of the Law.”
Shoes(readiness) of Gospel of Peace
The Gospel of Peace refers to the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and what He did for us. Because of His dying on the cross for us we can now have peace that we are forgiven, and that we are in good standing with God.
The Shoes of the readiness of the Gospel of Peace may sound a bit weird, but basically if we define readiness as being:
“completely prepared or in fit condition for immediate action or use”
We can then surmise that this piece of the armor of God refers to the fact that we need to be ready whenever God calls us to a situation where we need to share the Gospel of Jesus Christ with others. Our feet are made for moving and we need to be willing to run to wherever the lost may be in order to help bring them the news that can save them from eternal death.
Shield of Faith
The shield of faith is a crucial part of the armor of God. Faith in Jesus Christ, and in all of His promises is the foundation of Christianity. Without faith we cannot be saved, we cannot do miraculous things, we are unable to please God in any way. Satan time and time again tries to weaken our faith as he throws his fiery darts of doubt at us.
We need to stand firm in our faith so that we can use our faith to block these fiery darts of doubt and we can protect ourselves from becoming deceived by the words of satan.
Helmet of Salvation
The helmet of salvation represents the promise we have been given of eternal life. It represents the gift that is freely given by Jesus Christ because of the sacrifice He made on the cross. With the helmet of Salvation we can have a renewed mind and a renewed thinking that is rooted in the grace and mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Sword of the Spirit
The sword of the Spirit represents the Word of God. This Word is living and is very powerful when spoken in faith. The Word of God is our sword because it is our offensive weapon against satan and the powers of darkness that are trying to invade and conquer our lives. The Word of God is so powerful that it says it is sharper than any double edged sword. When the Word of God is spoken and is activated by faith the powers of darkness cannot stand, and retreat as fast as they can.
Hebrews 4:12 “For the word of God is alive and powerful. It is sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword, cutting between soul and spirit, between joint and marrow. It exposes our innermost thoughts and desires”
Without the armor of God we do not have the protection we need to withstand the attacks of satan. If even one piece is of this armor is missing then we are left with an opening in which we can become injured. We need to ensure that we are putting on the full armor of God each and everyday, and that we are praying in the spirit on a daily basis.
