In today’s world we are faced with many difficulties each and every day. While the difficulties we face vary, for most of us there is one common area that we struggle with and that is with our finances.
Today more than ever we are facing financial and economic crisis that is leaving many with barely enough to scrape by with. We as a nation have had to make major cut backs in our spending, and unfortunately for many that includes the giving of their tithes.
If you do not currently give tithes or have stopped due to having to cut back then you have effectively cut yourself off from being richly blessed by God. We see that in the Word of God, God takes tithing very seriously. Malachi 3:8-10 gives us a look at this:
“Should people cheat God? Yet you have cheated me! But you ask, ‘What do you mean? When did we ever cheat you? You have cheated me of the tithes and offerings due to me. You are under a curse, for your whole nation has been cheating me. Bring all the tithes into the storehouse so there will be enough food in my Temple.
If you do,” says the Lord of Heaven’s Armies, “I will open the windows of heaven for you. I will pour out a blessing so great you won’t have enough room to take it in! Try it! Put me to the test! Your crops will be abundant, for I will guard them from insects and disease.Your grapes will not fall from the vine before they are ripe,” says the Lord of Heaven’s Armies.”
What we have to remember is that it isn’t the money that God needs or wants; in fact God doesn’t need anything from us. What makes tithing important, and the reason why God instituted it was to teach us the fear Him, and to put our trust in Him instead of money.
God desires to have a strong and close relationship with Him; so close in fact that He wants you to be able to trust Him fully for everything. Too many times we get wrapped up in the financial worries of this world and we completely forget that God gave us the means to get our money. The money we get is merely God’s money that He has entrusted to us.
This is why giving whether tithing or giving of free will offerings is so powerful because it is an outward sign that you fully trust God to provide for all of your needs, despite how the circumstances in front of you look.
The following Bible verses help to further illustrate the importance of giving, and the importance of doing so with a cheerful heart and the right attitude:
“Give, and you will receive. Your gift will return to you in full—pressed down, shaken together to make room for more, running over, and poured into your lap. The amount you give will determine the amount you get back.”
2 Corinthians 9:7
“You must each decide in your heart how much to give. And don’t give reluctantly or in response to pressure. “For God loves a person who gives cheerfully.”
“If you help the poor, you are lending to the Lord— and he will repay you!”
It doesn’t matter how much you will be short on the rent or the food you may not be able to buy if you give tithes, if you are faithful in tithing to the Lord, He will be faithful in providing you with all that you need. Put Him to the test He even tells us to do so in the scripture above from Malachi.
