The Grace Deception – The Truth about God’s Grace

Until the fall of man, when Adam and Eve disobeyed God and sinned against Him in the garden, sin had not been present in the world. It was only after the fall that through the disobedience of Adam and Eve that sin was allowed to enter the world and satan gained dominion over the earth. It is because of this sin that we as a human race became separated from God, we became imperfect beings and began craving sinful(worldly) desires.

Through the grace of God, we have been given a way to mend or repair that separation from God, and have been given a way to overcome our sinful natures and receive eternal life with God.  God’s grace gave us Jesus Christ, God’s one and only Son who came down and paid the ultimate price for our sins.

Jesus Christ who is perfect in every way gave up His own life and paid the price for our sins (which was death) so that we could be made right with God through the blood of Jesus Christ. It is through the blood of Jesus that the separation between us and God because of sin was mended.

The Deception of God’s Grace

God’s grace is wonderful, and it is by God’s grace we have been saved from our sins, but there is a deception about God’s grace that has crept into the minds and hearts of many today including teachers and ministers of the Word of God.  Many today have been deceived into believing that as long as they have asked Jesus into their hearts and believe in Him that sin no longer matters.  You have received your “Free Ticket” to heaven and you can go on living your life the way you want because no matter whether you sin or not you will always be saved by the Grace of God.

This deception is dangerous as it gives new believers or currently unsaved people a false image of what Christianity and God’s grace is really about, and for those who are currently believers gives them a sense that it doesn’t matter if they sin right now they can just ask for forgiveness later and they will be made right with God again.  When God’s grace is taken advantage of in this way it provides a door that satan can use to continually get us to sin more and more until we have in our minds and hearts become desensitized enough to believe that sinning does not matter anymore.

We can see however, that according to God’s own Word that this type of ideology is nothing more than a truth from the Word of God twisted together with a lie from satan to produce a message that sounds good and right meant to tickle the ears of many. Unfortunately it has worked to lead many astray. Today I want to give you some Biblical truths that go against this deceptive view of God’s grace.

Biblical Truth 1 – God Does not Change

God is perfect, which means that He cannot, and does not change either for better or worse. If He did either of these He would not be truly perfect. We see that the Bible tells us in Hebrews 13:8:

“Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.”

This means that since God hated sin back in the old testament days, that He continues to hate sin today. God’s morals do not change, His thoughts, views, and Word is the same today as it was in the old testament. What God viewed as sinful back then is still sinful today, and what God desired from the people in the world back then he desires from the people in today’s world.

Biblical Truth 2 – God calls us to Repent and turn from our Sinful Lifestyles

When we give our lives to Christ,  it is much more than just a “Free Ticket” to Heaven.  It is about accepting Jesus Christ as not only our Savior but our Lord as well.  We are called make Jesus Christ number one in our lives and to turn away from our old sinful way of living and to turn to God and begin living a life that is pleasing and holy to God. We can see this point illustrated through the following Biblical passages:

Matthew 18:3:

“Then he said, “I tell you the truth, unless you turn from your sins and become like little children, you will never get into the Kingdom of Heaven”

1 Peter 1:14

“So you must live as God’s obedient children. Don’t slip back into your old ways of living to satisfy your own desires. You didn’t know any better then”

1 John 5:18

“We know that God’s children do not make a practice of sinning, for God’s Son holds them securely, and the evil one cannot touch them.”

Romans 6:1-4

“Well then, should we keep on sinning so that God can show us more and more of his wonderful grace? Of course not! Since we have died to sin, how can we continue to live in it? Or have you forgotten that when we were joined with Christ Jesus in baptism, we joined him in his death? For we died and were buried with Christ by baptism. And just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glorious power of the Father, now we also may live new lives.

1 John 3:4-9

“Everyone who sins is breaking God’s law, for all sin is contrary to the law of God. And you know that Jesus came to take away our sins, and there is no sin in him. Anyone who continues to live in him will not sin. But anyone who keeps on sinning does not know him or understand who he is. Dear children, don’t let anyone deceive you about this: When people do what is right, it shows that they are righteous, even as Christ is righteous. But when people keep on sinning, it shows that they belong to the devil, who has been sinning since the beginning. But the Son of God came to destroy the works of the devil. Those who have been born into God’s family do not make a practice of sinning, because God’s life is in them. So they can’t keep on sinning, because they are children of God.

Jesus Christ did not come and die for our sins so that we could continue to embrace and follow our sinful natures, rather He paid the price for our sins by dying on the cross so that through Him we could overcome sin and live holy, righteous lives in Him.

Biblical Truth 3 – God sent Jesus to Fulfill the law of Moses, not get rid of it.

We have to realize that when Jesus Christ came to pay for our sins by dying on the cross that He did not do so to get rid of or override the Law given in the old testament but rather He came to fulfill it.  We can see this clearly stated in Matthew 5:17

“Don’t misunderstand why I have come. I did not come to abolish the law of Moses or the writings of the prophets. No, I came to accomplish their purpose.”

What does this mean?

Well basically the law was given so that the people of those days could understand and realize that God was Holy and  that they were sinful.  Even though God desired that the people follow the law, He knew that because of our sin stained natures, that we would never be able to fully follow or fulfill the law.  The people needed a savior which paved the way for Jesus Christ to come, not to abolish or get rid of the law or the commands of God, but rather to fulfill them, so that through Jesus Christ God sees us as righteous and holy.
Biblical Truth 4 – Our Lives Reflect what We Believe and Who We Truly Follow

We have all probably heard the saying – “You are what you eat”, well in the spiritual part of our lives we can say that “You are Where your Heart Is”.  You see in the spiritual aspect of our lives there are only 2 choices, either you choose the satan(world, sin), or you choose God(life, holiness).  These are our only two options and while many may just reject both and claim to be “Atheists” and not believe in either satan or God.  The truth is that whether you believe in their existence or not, the fact is they do exist and you will end up following one of them.

Those who believe and accept in order to get the “Free Ticket” to Heaven and yet continue on in their sinful lives, are basically treating Christianity like a buffet.  They pick and chose the things, ideas and beliefs that sound good to them, but reject the things ideas and beliefs that sound too convicting, boring, are too hard, or doesn’t quite fit with their current life goals or lifestyles.

The Word of God tells us clearly that our lives will produce visible signs (fruits) based on where our hearts truly are.  It is by these visible signs that people around us can tell whether we are with Christ and following Christ or whether we are with satan and following the world.  This is shown in Galatians 5: 22-23 and 1 Corinthians 6:9:

“But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against these things!”

“Don’t you realize that those who do wrong will not inherit the Kingdom of God? Don’t fool yourselves. Those who indulge in sexual sin, or who worship idols, or commit adultery, or are male prostitutes, or practice homosexuality, 10 or are thieves, or greedy people, or drunkards, or are abusive, or cheat people—none of these will inherit the Kingdom of God”

We see that when we truly give our hearts to Christ we give Him our lives, and make Him our Lord.  We receive God’s Holy Spirit to help us live holy, and pleasing lives that will produce visible signs in our lives will be positive and uplifting to all who associate with us.  However those who believe, but purposely continue on in their old sinful lives after turning to Jesus Christ, may have accepted Christ, but never really give their lives to Him and make Him Lord which is the biggest part of Salvation.

Just remember that when you give your life to Christ and believe in Him, that it is more than just accepting the free gift of salvation.  It is the choice to Make Christ your Lord. turning from your old sinful lifestyle that was ruled by sin, and turning to Jesus Christ, repenting from your sins and make Jesus Christ number one in your life.

Jesus Christ is not meant to be just our savior, He is meant to be our Lord (someone having power, authority, or influence; a master or ruler), the one we strive to be like, to respect and honor.  God’s grace is about His love for us. It is about His willingness to send His only Son to die for us, it is about giving us the ability to be able to once again be close to Him, and to live lives that are pleasing to Him.  God’s grace does not give us the right to pick and choose what we want to follow, but rather comes as a package deal.
