Tithing in the Bible – Tithe Definition

Tithing in the Bible can be found in both the old and new testaments and is really more important that most people think. The Tithe definition is basically giving God 10% of your income.

Sadly people today have a very hard time giving tithes to the Lord. This is a very serious and dangerous problem that actually does a lot of harm to the persons life, and causes many blessings that God wants to give them to be blocked and therefore lost.

Why Tithing is Important

Tithing is so much more than just giving 10%. In fact tithing is an indicator of where our hearts are spiritually and shows the strength of our faith and our trust of our Lord Jesus Christ. There are many reasons that we as Christians need to begin tithing, regardless of whether we can afford it or not.

Here are a few of the reasons why Tithing is incredibly important in our lives:

1. Furthering the Kingdom of Heaven on Earth.

Tithing helps local churches have the funding and resources to help others in the community, bringing the gospel to the lost through outreaches.  Tithing also helps to upkeep the church buildings and allows for expansions as the lost are reached and begin to attend church.  Tithing is also used to help missionaries as well as providing resources to the lost and sick in other countries.

2. It’s Not Your Money

Yes I realize that you work hard to make your money, and that you earned every bit of it.  However, it was God that gave you the job, it was God that gave you the health and brains to be able to do the job, and it is God’s money that he is giving to you.

“Our money”  is not really ours it is only resources that God has entrusted to us.  Out of 100% of that money that He has given to us all he asks for is a measly 10% back.  That’s a great deal if you ask me.

3. Stealing from God

Believe it or not the Word of God says that if you withhold tithes from God that you are actually stealing from Him.  This is a very serious offense, one that is punishable by fines and or jail on earth.  How much more with the punishment be for stealing from our sovereign God.

Malachi 3:8 – ” Will man rob God?  Yet you are robbing me.  But you say, “How have we robbed you?”  In your tithes and contributions. (ESV)

4. How Much do you Really Trust Jesus?

I realize that times are tough and that there are many times where we can hardly pay our bills, and we simply believe that we do not have the money or resources to be able to tithe.

The truth of the matter is that God tells us in His Word that He will provide for every one of our needs.

Philippians 4:19 “And my God will supply all your needs according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus.”
Psalms 34:10 - The young lions suffer want and hunger; but those who seek the LORD lack no good thing.”

Luke 12:24 - Consider the ravens: they neither sow nor reap, they have neither storehouse nor barn, and yet God feeds them. Of how much more value are you than the birds!”

Matthew 6:31-32 - Therefore do not be anxious, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all.

In fact even directly related to the tithes in the Bible, God tells us test Him with tithes and just see the blessings that He pours down over us for being faithful to give tithes.

Malachi 3:10 – “Bring the full tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. And thereby put me to the test, says the Lord of hosts, if I will not open the windows of heaven for you and pour down for you a blessing until there is no more need.”

Regardless of how much money you have or how financially sound you are the fact of the matter is that tithing is basically an indication of where your trust resides.  Either your trust resides in your money and yourself or your trust resides in our Lord Jesus Christ and everything He tells us in His Word.

5. Who is your Lord?  Money or God?

There is only one thing that God ever compares himself to and that is Money.  The real question you have to ask yourself is who are you making your Lord?  Are you tossing God aside in your life for money or are you placing your sole trust and focus on God and allowing Him to come through and provide for you and your family in every way.

The Word of God tells us quite clearly that we can only serve one master, either money (serving the world) or God.  We have to make that choice once and for all, there is no sitting on the fence we are either fully and wholeheartedly serving God and trusting in Him or we are fully and wholeheartedly serving and relying on the world and ourselves.

Tithing shows where our hearts are spiritually and shows that we have chosen to make God our Lord and that we no longer have an attachment to worldly wealth but we are instead relying on God to make provision for us.

As you can see Tithing is a lot more than just giving 10% of our income, in fact is not really about the “Giving” aspect at all.  It is more about our hearts, our relationship with Jesus Christ, and our trust in Him.  It is about where our hearts are spiritually.  As Christians we should jump at the opportunity to give tithes back to God.
