What the Bible says about Perseverance – 12 Bible Verses about Persevering

Perseverance is defined as:

A continued forward movement or steadiness along a course despite any obstacles or resistance that comes up against you.”

Perseverance is a key quality that every Christian needs in order to finish their life on this journey well.  As Christians we face an incredible amount of hurdles, road blocks and resistance from satan himself and those who follow him.

Perseverance can also be described as a steadfastness, determination, persistence, endurance and immovability.  These words speak of a person who is so driven by the grace of God, who is so full of the Spirit of God that they are immovable in the course of their Christian walk and the assignments and plans God has for them.

The Lord tells us in His Word that we are to be persistent, we are to persevere and we are to have a steadfastness about us in order to keep the faith and receive our reward at the end of our time here on earth.  Here are 12 Bible verses that talk about perseverance.

James 1:2-8 Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness.  And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.

If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.  But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind.  For that person must not suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord; he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.

Jude 17-23 But you must remember, beloved, the predictions of the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ.   They said to you, “In the last time there will be scoffers, following their own ungodly passions.” It is these who cause divisions, worldly people, devoid of the Spirit.

But you, beloved, building yourselves up in your most holy faith and praying in the Holy Spiritkeep yourselves in the love of God, waiting for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ that leads to eternal life.   And have mercy on those who doubt;  save others by snatching them out of the fire; to others show mercy with fear, hating even the garment stained by the flesh

Romans 5:4And endurance develops strength of character, and character strengthens our confident hope of salvation.

1 Corinthians 15:58 “So, my dear brothers and sisters, be strong and immovable. Always work enthusiastically for the Lord, for you know that nothing you do for the Lord is ever useless.

Psalm 119:1-8 “Blessed are those whose way is blameless,  who walk in the law of the Lord!  Blessed are those who keep his testimonies, who seek him with their whole heart, who also do no wrong, but walk in his ways!  You have commanded your precepts to be kept diligently.  O that my ways may be steadfast in keeping your statutes!

Then I shall not be put to shame, having my eyes fixed on all your commandments.  I will praise you with an upright heart, when I learn your righteous rules.  I will keep your statutes; do not utterly forsake me!

2 Timothy 2 1 -6 , 11-13:  “Timothy, my dear son, be strong through the grace that God gives you in Christ Jesus.  You have heard me teach thing that have been confirmed by many reliable witnesses.  Now teach these truths to other trustworthy people who will be able to pass them on to others.

Endure suffering along with me, as a good soldier of Christ Jesus.  Soldiers  don’t get tied up in the affairs of civilian life, for then they cannot please the officer who enlisted them.  And athletes cannot win the prize unless they follow the rules.  And hardworking farmers should be the first to enjoy the fruit of their labor.

This is a trustworthy saying:  If we die with him, we will also live with him.  If we endure hardship we will reign with him.  If we deny him, he will deny us.  If we are unfaithful, he remains faithful, for he cannot deny who he is.”

John 16:33  I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me. Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world.”

Matthew 24:13Sin will be rampant everywhere, and the love of many will grow cold.  But the one who endures to the end will be saved. And the Good News about the Kingdom will be preached throughout the whole world, so that all nations will hear it; and then the end will come.

Philippians 3:13,14 “No, dear brothers and sisters, I have not achieved it, but I focus on this one thing: Forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead,  I press on to reach the end of the race and receive the heavenly prize for which God, through Christ Jesus, is calling us.”

Psalm 16:8I have set the Lord always before me: because he is at my right hand, I shall not be moved.

Hebrews 10:23Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who promised is faithful.”

Psalm 119:133Keep steady my steps according to your promise, and let no iniquity get dominion over me.
