Are You a Verbal Polluter?

Verbal pollution affects many of us on a day to day basis whether it is us or somebody else doing the polluting.  Verbal pollution can be broken down into two types of pollution, the first being foul or abusive language and the other being negative or destructive talk coming from your mouth.   It is important to remember that according to the Word of God our tongues can either speak words of life or words of death.   As Christians we are to work hard at keeping our mouth from uttering statements or words of death. We see that the Word of God is quite clear on this in:

Ephesians 4:29:

Don’t use foul or abusive language.  Let everything you say be good and helpful, so that your words will be an encouragement to those who hear them.

Proverbs 8:13:

All who fear the Lord will hate evil.  Therefore, I hate pride and arrogance, corruption and perverse speech.

These verses clearly show us that God hates perverse, abusive or foul language, but what many don’t realize is that these verses also encompass the second type of verbal pollution; Negative or Destructive talk.    Negative or Destructive talk can include things like murmuring, complaining, speaking out negativity over yourself or others, speaking curses and belittling.  This type of speech is incredibly destructive, and works to open the door for Satan to get in and use this type of speech to bring on anger, strife, bickering, sadness, depression, maliciousness and other negative effects.

We need to understand and remember that our speech directly corresponds to what is in our hearts.  If God is in our hearts and we are striving to do His will, meditate on His Word and have a strong close relationship with Him then our hearts should be producing fruits that are consistent with the nature of God.  However if God is not in our lives or God is in our lives but we fail to make God the focal point in our lives, consistently meditating on His Word and striving to build the relationship we have with Him then we allow the world to have an open door to contaminate our hearts and we begin to produces fruits of the world.  We can see that the Word of God lines up with this in:

Philippians 4:8:

And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing.  Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right and pure and lovely, and admirable.  Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise.”

Luke 6:45:

“A good person produces good things from the treasure of a good heart, and an evil person produces evil things from the treasury of and evil heart.  What you say flows from what is in your heart.”

Galatians 5:22:

“But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.  There is no law against these things!  Those who belong to Christ Jesus have nailed the passions and desires of their sinful nature to his cross and crucified them there.”

My Prayer:

Heavenly Father thank you for your love and goodness.  Father I am guilty of verbal pollution and I ask that you would forgive me in the Name of Jesus for this type of speech that has come out of my mouth.  I thank you for your forgiveness and accept it today.   Father today I want to make you the focal point in my life and I want to begin producing Godly fruit in my life.  Father I ask that you would help me and give me the strength to fight past any distraction or previous negative thoughts or speech.  I ask that today that I would be renewed in You and I thank you for your grace and mercy.  Amen
