We have all come from different places in our lives, we have all done different things; things we’re proud of and others that we wish would have never happened. There are things that we did and there are things that happened to us that we had no control over, yet they continue to haunt us over and over again.
There are so many people out there who live lives full of sadness, stress and regret due to what has happened to them or what they have done in their past. The problem is that the weight of our past is heavy and burdensome and the more we continue to carry it with us into the future the heavier and more worn out we become.
But Praise God there is hope. The truth is that when we become children of God, He gives us His Grace and Mercy to be able to face the things of our past, work through them, and then bury them at the foot of the cross where they belongs. He gives us freedom from our burdens, and from having to continually drag the terrors of our past with us.
The Word of God tells us to forget about our past, to instead look to the future to what God has in store for you. We can see this through the following verses:
Philippians 3:13,14 – “No, dear brothers and sisters, I have not achieved it, but I focus on this one thing: Forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead, I press on to reach the end of the race and receive the heavenly prize for which God, through Christ Jesus, is calling us.
Isaiah 43:18,19 “Remember not the former things, nor consider the things of old. Behold, I am doing a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? I will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert.”
2 Corinthians 5:17 “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.”
When we give our lives to Christ and ask for forgiveness for the things we have done, and ask for God’s grace and mercy for those things that have been done to us and caused us great hurt we are washed clean in the sight of God and He will pour out His grace and mercy and will bring us over our mountains, He will bring us through our storms, and He will bring us into the fullness of life that He desires for us.
The Word of God tells us that when we ask for His forgiveness that we are cleansed by the blood of Jesus and He remembers our sins no more. So if God doesn’t remember or hold our pasts or hold them against us then why should we do it to ourselves?
The truth is that for many of us our pasts have gone too far with us in our lives, we need to let go of our pasts, let go of our regrets bury them all at the foot of the cross and start living our lives free of the burdens and hurts of our past.
Isaiah 43:25 “I, I am He who blots out your transgressions for my own sake, and I will not remember your sins.”
Romans 8:1 “There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.”
Hebrews 10:17 “Then he adds, “I will remember their sins and their lawless deeds no more.”
Heavenly Father I thank you for your forgiveness, love, grace and mercy over my life. I thank you for giving me your Grace so that I can deal with and forget my past once and for all. I know that I have been forgiven for the things I have done and that you are here to help me through any pain and hurt that I feel from my past. Lord today I bury the things of my past at the foot of the cross, I give these things to you Lord Jesus and I ask that you would lead and guide me by your Spirit into the fulfilled, blessed life that you desire for me. Amen.
