We live in a period in time where selfishness is at an all time high. This can be seen by the lack of love and the overwhelming amount of violence towards others in today’s society. Selfishness and pride are at the root of the sinful nature, this is why we can see sin running rampant today and quickly spreading. We are all selfish in one form or another, it is a natural part of our flesh, in order to combat our selfish sinful nature we need to feed our spirit the Word of God and ask for God’s help to become sensitive to the Holy Spirits’ leading in our lives. The Bible has many verses that speak on selfishness and today I am going to show you what the Word of God has to say concerning this topic.
I trust that the following Bible verses about selfishness will help to bring new realization and strike up the desire to want to change and renew you mind and spirit in Christ so that we can begin to operate in the fruits of the spirit instead of the fruits of the sinful nature.
James 3:16 “For wherever there is jealousy and selfish ambition, there you will find disorder and evil of every kind.”
Philippians 2:3 “Don’t be selfish; don’t try to impress others. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourselves.”
James 3:14-15 “But if you are bitterly jealous and there is selfish ambition in your heart, don’t cover up the truth with boasting and lying. For jealousy and selfishness are not God’s kind of wisdom. Such things are earthly, nonspiritual, and demonic.”
Galatians 5:19-21 “When you follow the desires of your sinful nature, the results are very clear: sexual immorality, impurity, lustful pleasures, idolatry, sorcery, hostility, quarreling, jealousy, outbursts of anger, selfish ambition, dissension, division, envy, drunkenness, wild parties, and other sins like these. Let me tell you again, as I have before that anyone living that sort of life will not inherit the Kingdom of God.”
Luke 9:23 “Then he said to the crowd, ‘If any of you wants to be my follower, you must turn from your selfish ways, take up your cross daily, and follow me.”
Proverbs 18:1 “An unfriendly person pursues selfish ends and against all sound judgment starts quarrels.”
Psalms 119:36 “Turn my heart towards your statutes and not toward selfish gain.”
Romans 2:8 “But He will pour out his anger and wrath on those who life for themselves, who refuse to obey the truth and instead live lives of wickedness.”
2 Timothy 3:1-3 “You should know this, Timothy, that in the last days there will be very difficult times. For people will love only themselves and their money. They will be boastful and proud, scoffing at God, disobedient to their parents, and ungrateful. They will consider nothing sacred. They will be unloving and unforgiving; they will slander others and have no self-control. They will be cruel and hate what is good.
Matthew 20:28 “For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve others and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
Romans 13:14 “Instead, clothe yourself with the presence of the Lord Jesus Christ. And don’t let yourself think about ways to indulge your evil desires”
We see through these Bible verses about selfishness that the Word of God speaks against following our own selfish desires as it opens the doors for many terrible sinful actions to manifest in our lives. Even Jesus the Savior of the world came not to be served by others but to serve others and even die for their sins. As Christians we must begin seeking God so that we can have the strength and grace daily to set aside our sinful selfish desires and instead begin serving others and putting others needs before our own.
