Important Bible Verses when Considering Divorce

Divorce is a very serious and life altering decision that must not be taken lightly.  Divorce although at the time may seem like the easiest thing to do, or may look like the only option left at that particular point in time the truth of the matter is that the Bible teaches us that divorce should never be an option outside of marital unfaithfulness. God can and is willing to help us through ANY challenge at any time in marriage that we may face no matter how difficult or how emotionally draining it is.  We just have to ask in faith, place the issue(s) at His feet and trust that He will help us to work everything out.

The Word of God talks about divorce and is very cut and dry on this issue.  If you are considering divorce then I would encourage you to take a close look at what exactly God has to say about it in His Word before you go through with it.

Matthew 5:31 “You have heard the law that says, ‘A man can divorce his wife by merely giving her a written notice of divorce.’  But I say that a man who divorces his wife, unless she has been unfaithful, causes her to commit adultery.  And anyone who marries a divorced woman also commits adultery.”

Mark 10:6-9 “But God made them male and female from the beginning of creation.  This explains why a man leaves his father and mother and is joined to his wife, and the two are united into one.  Since they are no longer two but one, let no one split apart what God has joined together.”

Malachi 2:16 “For I hate divorce! says the Lord, the God of Israel.  TO divorce your wife is to overwhelm her with cruelty, says the Lord of Heaven’s armies.  So guard your heart; do not be unfaithful to your wife.”

Matthew 19:7-9 “Then why did Moses say in the law that a man could give his wife a written notice of divorce and send her away?  they asked.  Jesus replied ‘Moses permitted divorce only as a concession to your hard hearts, but it was not what God had originally intended.  And I tell you this, whoever divorces his wife and marries someone else commits adultery–unless his wife has been unfaithful.”

Hebrews 13:4 “Give honor to marriage, and remain faithful to one another in marriage.  God will surely judge people who are immoral and those who commit adultery.”

As we can see from these Bible verses about divorce, God never intended divorce to be an option, he created marriage to be a strong life long union between a man an a woman; only to be separated by death.  It is so very important for you to keep your marriage union together at all costs.
