“Life and Death is in the Power of the Tongue” Bible Verse

The line – “Life and Death is in the Power of the Tongue” is the first half of the Bible verse that speaks about the power of our tongue(words) and is found in Proverbs 18:21. The second half of this verse continues – “And those who love it will eat its’ fruit“.

This Bible verse about the tongue is basically saying that with your mouth you can create words of positivity, faith, and encouragement or on the other end of the spectrum you can create words of negativity, fear, discouragement, and anger. Whatever words you choose to create and share out of your mouth, will determine the consequences whether good or bad that will be brought forth in your life.

An example of this in the Bible would be that Jesus spoke for life into Lazarus and he was raised from the dead. On the other hand we see that in the New Testament that Jesus spoke words of death to a fig tree and it died.

Mark 11:14 – “In response Jesus said to it, “Let no one eat fruit from you ever again.

Now in terms of our lives today, we know and understand that death is used to describe sin, and life is used to describe righteousness. We as Christians have the ability to either use our mouths for Christ or for Satan. Depending on which words you choose you will reap the consequences of these words.

One of the easiest ways you can tell the strength of the relationship with Christ a person has is to listen to the words coming out of their mouths. It tells us in Luke 6:45:

The good person out of the good treasure of his heart produces good, and the evil person out of his evil treasure produces evil, for out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks

A person who says they are a Christian but constantly uses his mouth to spurt lies, wickedness, complaints, murmuring, and words that tear people down, cannot have a heart after Christ, but rather a heart after this world. It tells us in Ephesians 4:29:

Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear.

Proverbs 10:32The lips of the righteous know what is acceptable, but the mouth of the wicked, what is perverse.

Isaiah 58:9 -”Then you shall call, and the Lord will answer; you shall cry, and he will say, ‘Here I am.’ If you take away the yoke from your midst, the pointing of the finger, and speaking wickedness“.

We have to remember that Life and Death are in the Power of the Tongue and we need to make sure that we are using our mouths to spread words of righteousness.
