Fasting is giving up something that means a lot to you or is very important to you in exchange for spending more time with God (in prayer and worship). Fasting takes great faith and should be done with the right heart. Fasting is often a great way to open the door to that breakthrough that you have been praying and believing for.
The Word of God gives us many verses about fasting, and shows us the importance of taking time to give up something of importance for a short while, in order to spend more time praying and worshiping, and listening for what God has to say to us. While the Biblical references to fasting are mainly to do with food, you can also fast things like tv, movies, sweets, or anything else that you would find to be a big sacrifice. Here are some great Fasting Bible verses that will show you what the Word of God says on this subject.
Isaiah 58:3,4 “We have fasted before you!’ they say. ‘Why aren’t you impressed? We have been very hard on ourselves, and you don’t even notice it!’ “I will tell you why!” I respond. “It’s because you are fasting to please yourselves. Even while you fast, you keep oppressing your workers. What good is fasting when you keep on fighting and quarreling? This kind of fasting will never get you anywhere with me.”
Joel 2:12 “That is why the Lord says, “Turn to me now, while there is time. Give me your hearts. Come with fasting, weeping, and mourning.”
Matthew 6:16 ““And when you fast, don’t make it obvious, as the hypocrites do, for they try to look miserable and disheveled so people will admire them for their fasting. I tell you the truth, that is the only reward they will ever get.”
Acts 13:2,3 “One day as these men were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, “Dedicate Barnabas and Saul for the special work to which I have called them. So after more fasting and prayer, the men laid their hands on them and sent them on their way.”
Acts 14:23 “Paul and Barnabas also appointed elders in every church. With prayer and fasting, they turned the elders over to the care of the Lord, in whom they had put their trust.”
Esther 4:16 “Go and gather together all the Jews of Susa and fast for me. Do not eat or drink for three days, night or day. My maids and I will do the same. And then, though it is against the law, I will go in to see the king. If I must die, I must die.”
1 Corinthians 7:5 “Do not deprive each other of sexual relations, unless you both agree to refrain from sexual intimacy for a limited time so you can give yourselves more completely to prayer. Afterward, you should come together again so that Satan won’t be able to tempt you because of your lack of self-control”
Mark 9:29 “So He said to them, “This kind can come out by nothing but prayer and fasting.” (talking about a demon)
Daniel 9:3 ” So I turned to the Lord God and pleaded with him in prayer and fasting. I also wore rough burlap and sprinkled myself with ashes.”
2 Samuel 12:16 “David therefore besought God for the child; and David fasted, and went in, and lay all night upon the earth.”
