We all have emotions that at times seem to take over and control our thoughts and actions. It is in these times where we can do or say things that we later regret. Learning how to control emotions is very difficult, but with your determination and the help of the Holy Spirit you can overcome your emotions, and instead of reacting based on your emotions you can react based on what the Word of God says.
The definition of emotions is “a natural instinctive state of mind deriving from one’s circumstances, mood, or relationships with others“. The definition of instinct is “a natural or intuitive way of acting or thinking“. This instinctive state of mind is where we get into trouble with our emotions, because our natural tendency (instinct) is to lean or go towards “the flesh” or our sinful nature. That is why when we let our emotions rule our actions we often say or do things that are not loving or not Christ-Like and we later have regret.
This is why it is so important for us to renew our minds in Christ, and to think and meditate on the Word of God and His Goodness. The truth of the matter is that we live in a sinful world, and there will always be circumstances or people that come against us and bring hurt, offense, pain, guilt and strife. In the end it is during these times where we must push push our emotions back and reach for God’s grace so that we can react in a way where the love of Christ will be seen by those coming against you.
Below is an incredible video on how to control emotions by Joyce Meyer. I pray that you would be greatly blessed by it, and that you would learn how to stop reacting with emotions, and start reacting with the love of Christ.
